9th August 2014 – Confidence in the Truth Seminar

I found the DVD from last year’s apologetics conference called ‘Confidence in the Truth’ and watched a seminar by Professor John Lennox (again)…

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” John 1:1-3

  • It started yet again with the question of who created the Creator?
    • I’ll touch on it again – assumes that God is a created entity but the verse from John (above) says that the Word (i.e God) was there in and before the beginning
    • In the original Greek, it says ‘all things that come to be through him and God never came to be which is something all Abrahamic religions agree on
    • atheists argue that surely the Christian God is just like Zeus and Jupiter etc.
    • The difference is that these gods are derived from matter (material gods), they ‘descended from heaven and earth’
    • The Bible states that “God created the heaven and the earth”
    • God is the one from whom everything was derived so he was not created
  • So the next point was: How did everything come from nothing?
    • Atheists now are attempting to redefine nothing
    • Stephen Hawking says in his book (‘The Great Design’) “Because there is a law of gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing”
    • Creating itself is complete nonsense
    • y creates x – y must exist in order to create x (reasonable, one thing creating another like me making a sandwich)
    • Hawking is saying that x creates x – assume existence of x to explain the existence x (unreasonable, like my sandwich creating itself – my sandwich has to exist already in order to make itself)
    • Nonsense no matter who says it
    • Even then, the laws of gravity don’t create anything – they describe but don’t cause
    • CS Lewis said: “you can do arithmetic from now until eternity but it won’t put any money in your bank”
    • This statement from Hawking is riddled with contradictions
  • Desperation to get something from nothing because now it is most commonly accepted the the universe had a beginning
    • For centuries the Bible has said the universe had a beginning when most scientists believed it was eternal
    • When evidence for a beginning accumulated in the 1960s, there was fierce resistance
    • The mechanisms (physical laws) and the agency (cause) are being confused in this struggle to get something out of nothing
    • You need both and not a ‘God of the Gaps’ – a God who is responsible for the stuff we don’t understand
